Next Generation Synchronus Digital Hierarchy

Next Generation Synchronus Digital Hierarchy

This unit enables the learner to understand the underlying principles of Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) within international telecommunications and the broadcast industries. It provides information on the Next Generation functionality that is extending the life of this technology and o ering better SDH transport e ciencies while being able to carry an increasing number of protocols. The subject areas of synchronisation, multiplexing, management, control and protection will be studied along with a comprehensive analysis of alarms and faults. Common network elements, con gurations and hardware will be described and overall network topologies available to service providers will be analysed. The unit also covers the practical aspects of installation, testing and commissioning of equipment and networks. This will include an in-depth study of typical sites which will be undertaken in relation to site planning, layout and placement of SDH equipment. The practical work will also involve the implementation of the operation control of a local terminal andits use in commissioning. Fault diagnosis techniques will be undertaken, particularly the use of internal alarms.
